The history in brief
During Moorish rule, Albir was primarily an agricultural area, where crops such as almonds, olives and grapes were grown.
Around the 13th century, Albir came under Christian rule. It remained a small fishing village until the 18th century, when winegrowing flourished in the region. At that time, Albir still belonged to the municipality of Polop.
After a long struggle for independence, (the municipality of) Alfaz del Pi, which includes Albir, officially became an independent municipality in 1836.
In the 20th century, Albir developed into a popular tourist destination. The beautiful beach, the long boulevard and the favorable location on the Costa Blanca attracted more and more visitors.
The name ‘Albir’ and ‘Alfaz del Pi’
It is unclear where the name ‘Albir’ comes from. Possibly it is a corruption of ‘Alfaz del Pi,’ as that name originated in 1786.
After a long struggle for independence, the planting of a pine tree in the village square symbolized the new name: Alfaz del Pi. Alfaz refers to the fertile valley, while Pi (pine tree) in Valencian represents the tree in the square.
