Benissa (in both Spanish and Valencian) belonging to the municipality of Benissa, is one of the oldest towns on the Costa Blanca in Spain.
The town is located 275 meters above sea level. It is at about the same altitude as Moraira and about 10 kilometers from the beach and the Mediterranean Sea.

Getting to know Benissa and its history
Did you know that…
- the historic center of Benissa is several kilometers inland, yet the municipality has its own 4-kilometer coastline sandwiched between Moraira and Calpe;
- the inhabitants of Benissa speak their own dialect, namely el Benissero;
- the large church of Benissa, also known as the Cathedral of the Marina, was entirely financed and built by the residents themselves in the 20th century;
- putxero the polpeen is a typical dish here, it consists of (sweet) potato, rice, octopus, almonds, chickpeas, garlic, onion and tomato;
- Benissa is also known for its sausages, namely: the butifarra (blood sausage) and the llonganissa (traditional sausage).

The history in brief
Benissa has a long history dating back to prehistory. Traces have been found of various civilizations, such as the Iberians, Romans and Moors. In the Middle Ages Benissa was conquered by the Christians. To protect the town from pirates, city walls were built.
The inhabitants mainly lived from agriculture. Grapes, almonds and olives were important products. After the expulsion of the Moors in 1609, new residents came from Northern Spain. Benissa has a well-preserved historical center with cobbled streets, old walls and mansions. A walk through this center gives a good picture of the city’s history.
The name ‘Benissa’
The name Benissa comes from the Arabic word “Beni-Issa”, which means “sons of Isa”. It refers to the time when the Moors ruled the area during the Middle Ages.

The location of Benissa
Benissa is located in the northern part of the Costa Blanca, right between the coastal towns of Calpe and Moraira on the Mediterranean Sea. The territory of the municipality runs from the coastline to the mountains of the Sierra de Bèrnia inland.
Its central position near the N-332 coastal road and the AP-7 highway makes the locality easily accessible from the Alicante and Valencia airports. This makes the municipality a practical place for travelers to discover the various villages and natural areas in the province.

The nature around Benissa
The nature surrounding Benissa consists of a varied landscape of rugged mountain ranges, rolling vineyards and a picturesque coastline with hidden coves:

Sierra de Bernianature reserve: this mountain range is 11 kilometers long and lies between the coast and the interior. A hiking trail leads through El Forat, a natural tunnel in the rocks. After the tunnel, you have views of the coast from Altea to Alicante;

The ecological coastal route: this 4-kilometer path, called Paseo Ecológico, runs along the coast of Benissa. The route connects coves such as Cala Llobella and Cala Advocat. During the walk you will see local plants and the rock Peñón de Ifach;

Sierra de Oltánature reserve: this area is a 15-minute drive from Benissa. Here, follow the hiking trail past the chapel Ermita de la Vella. The mountains are less steep than the Bernia and offer views of the Jalon Valley vineyards and coastal towns.

- Casa Bernardi: in the middle of nature with a view of the Mediterranean Sea and Penyal d’Ifac;
- Orobianco: the same applies to Casa Bernardi, but more towards Calpe.

Transportation & accommodation in Benissa
By plane to Benissa
For a holiday to Benissa, the airport Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández (ALC) is the most logical choice. From this airport it is approximately 80 kilometers to Benissa, a car ride that usually takes 60 to 75 minutes.
There are numerous direct flights from the Netherlands and Belgium to Alicante with companies such as Transavia, KLM, Vueling, Ryanair and TUI fly, which makes Benissa easily accessible.

Ja, Benissa heeft een klein centrum. De straat Avenida del Pais Valencia loopt dwars door het dorp. In het midden vind je een parkje genaamd Glorieta Dolores Piera en met daarbij de Basílica Puríssima Xiqueta i Sant Pere Apòstol.
Heeft Benissa een strand?
Ja, Benissa kent meerdere stranden. Beter gezegd cala's, waaronder Cala Baladrar, Cala Advocat, Cala de la Llobella. Cala Pinets, Cala de la Fustera/Playa Benissa en Cala de les Bassetes.
Is Benissa een leuke plaats?
Ja, Benissa is een leuke plaats als je houdt van rust en natuur. De plaats is minder toeristisch dan andere omliggende plaatsen. Daarnaast ligt het tussen het gebergte en boven een aantal kleine wijngaarden.
