The castle of Alicante

For more than 1,000 years, Castillo de Santa Bárbara has watched over Alicante. The origin of the castle dates back to the 9th century, during Islamic rule. Remnants of this Arab period are still visible in the foundations and oldest parts of the castle.

In the centuries that followed, and especially after its reconquest, it grew into one of the largest medieval castles in Spain, with robust walls and bastions testifying to its later Christian military expansions. On December 4, 1248, the day of Saint Barbara, the castle was recaptured from the Moors by King Alfonso X, from which it takes its name. Due to its strategic location, the castle has played a crucial role in the defense of the city and region over the centuries.

Today, the castle is a popular attraction where visitors can wander around centuries-old halls, towers and squares. You can enjoy breathtaking views of Alicante, the port and the Mediterranean Sea. The castle is managed by the municipality of Alicante and is a symbol of the city.

Monte Benacantil nature reserve

The castle is located in the middle of the green setting of Monte Benacantil. This area is not only historically interesting, but also natural. Around the castle you will find hiking trails, pine trees and small rocky outcrops, where you can spot lizards and sometimes even see birds of prey soaring above the city.

In addition to these animals, you can also find typical Mediterranean flora such as rosemary, thyme and various types of cacti. A walk here feels like an oasis of peace in the middle of the busy city. The mountain itself is also known for a peculiar rock formation on its southwestern slope, known as La Cara del Moro (the Moorish Face). According to legend, this is the petrified profile of a Moorish prince who jumped from the mountain out of love. Look closely and you may see his face watching over the city.

The castle is 166 meters above sea level at the top of Monte Benacantil, the distinctive rock that dominates Alicante’s skyline. There are several ways to get to the castle:

  • By car or cab: there is a road that winds up from the back of the mountain. There is also a small parking lot right near the entrance here;
  • By public transportation: there time a Shuttle bus, it leaves from Plaza Puerta del Mar and runs every 20 minutes. A ticket costs €1.45 for a single trip. Below is the timetable for each period:
    • From Nov. 15 to Feb. 27: Monday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m;

A must in high temperatures or for those with reduced mobility. Keep in mind that in high season you may have to wait in line outside. There is little shade here;
  • Walking: there are several ways to reach the castle on foot. You can “climb” the mountain from several starting points near the Marq Castillo streetcar stops (north of the castle) and Mercado (west of the castle). The different sections of the castle

Once inside the castle walls, there is plenty to discover. The castle consists of three different stepped enclosures from different periods:

  1. La Torreta: the highest and oldest part, with the impressive Torre del Homenaje (the keep or main tower) and remains from the 14th century. From here the views are spectacular;
  2. The middle enclosure: here you will find important buildings from the 16th century, such as the Salón Felipe II, the Patio de Armas (Arms Square) and the Baluarte de la Reina (Sphere of the Queen). Wander through the halls and imagine what life was like here centuries ago;
  3. The lower enclosure: it dates back to the 18th century and here is the Revellín del Bon Repós.

Several areas within the castle, including the MUSA (Museum of the City of Alicante), hold regular exhibitions highlighting the history of the city and the castle. Archaeological finds and historical artifacts are often on display. Inquire locally about current exhibits and whether tours (possibly with audio guide) are available.

  • Temporary art and historical exhibitions;
  • Concerts and musical performances, especially in the summer evenings;
  • Medieval markets and theme days;

Additional Practical Tips for Your Visit

  • Best time to visit: come early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the biggest crowds and, especially in summer, the hottest hours of the day. The sunset from the castle is magical;
  • What to bring: definitely water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat or cap, as there is not shade everywhere. Comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you will be hiking or doing a lot of exploring;
  • Time Required: count on at least 2 to 3 hours for a visit, especially if you want to look around quietly, take pictures and enjoy the view;
  • Photography tips: in addition to the 360-degree panorama, there are countless photogenic nooks, old walls and vistas. The “golden hours” (shortly after sunrise and before sunset) provide the most beautiful light;
  • Food and Drink: There are usually some kiosks or a cafeteria inside the castle walls where you can buy drinks, ice cream and snacks. Opening hours and offerings may vary;
  • Accessibility: although the elevator provides access to part of the castle, some paths and older sections within the castle may be uneven and contain stairs, which may limit accessibility for strollers or wheelchairs. Inquire at the entrance for the most accessible routes;
  • Dogs: may enter the grounds only through the old guardhouse and may not enter the elevator or the halls and museums.

Parking

The closest and most recommended parking option is the parking lot at Parque de la Ereta. This park is located on the slope of Mount Benacantil, below the castle. From here you can continue on foot up to the castle. This parking lot is also called La Ereta car park(google maps) and is free.
