The port of Dénia
The port of Dénia is a dynamic location where more than 2,000 years of maritime history meets the vibrancy of today. Once a strategic Roman naval base and later a center for trade and privateering, the port now serves as the main link between the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands.
In addition to its crucial role for passenger shipping and commercial fishing, which culminates daily at the fish auction(Lonja), it is also a modern marina with excellent facilities for pleasure and mega-yachts.
The port has become an attractive recreational area with several “zones,” each with its own character. It is a popular place to stroll, dine and go out, with stunning views of the city and the Mediterranean Sea. The main areas are:
-
The promenade Muelle de Rivera: This is where the larger yachts and tourist boats depart;
-
Marina El Portet: this is the modern center with restaurants, bars and nautical businesses;
-
Estación Marítima: from here ferries leave from Baleària to Ibiza and Formentera.

The history in brief
-
Prehistory/Old Age: The earliest traces of human habitation date from prehistory. The city flourished under the Romans. It functioned as an important port and trade center at that time;
-
Middle Ages (8th – 13th centuries): the city was conquered by the Arabs in the 8th century and was part of the Islamic Caliphate of Córdoba. The strategically important Castle of Dénia was built during this period;
-
High Middle Ages (13th century): King Jaime I of Aragon recaptured Dénia in the 13th century, making it a Christian city. The castle was further fortified and served as an important stronghold;
-
Modern History (19th century): Dénia developed into a crucial port city, mainly thanks to the large-scale export of raisins and other local products;
-
Present: the city today combines its historic charm and rich culinary traditions with a thriving tourism industry.
The name Dénia
The name Dénia is derived from the Roman name “Dianium.” The Romans named the city after their goddess of hunting and the moon, Diana, in whose honor a temple probably stood. The name later evolved through the Moorish “Daniya” to the current name Dénia.

Nature around Dénia
Nature around Dénia is dominated by the impressive Montgó massif and vast wetlands:

-
The Marjal de Pego-Oliva Natural Park: (about 20-30 min drive) north of Dénia is this protected wetland, one of the most important wetlands of the Comunidad Valenciana. The area includes vast rice fields and canals, and serves as a crucial breeding and migration stopover for a wide variety of waterfowl;
-
The Cova Tallada: (right on the coast of the Montgó) a spectacular sea cave at the foot of the Montgó; in ancient times this cave was used as a quarry(tallada means “cut”). Accessible only on foot (via a challenging path) or by kayak, the cave offers clear turquoise water and cliff views;
-
The landscape of the Cape of San Antonio (Cabo de San Antonio): this is the tip of the Montgó massif that separates the Bay of Denia from Jávea(Xàbia).
