El Fondo (El Hondo) Natural Park in Elche
Hiking, climbing or diving around this iconic rock formation
Hidden among the orchards and palm farms of the Baix Vinalopó region, near Elche and Crevillent, lies one of Europe’s most important wetlands: the Parque Natural El Hondo(Parc Natural El Fondo in Valencian). This vast wetland, a remnant of the historic Albufera of Elche, is a true paradise for birdwatchers and an oasis of calm in the otherwise arid landscape of the Costa Blanca South.
Since 1988, this area of nearly 2,400 hectares has been protected as a natural park. It consists of a complex system of reservoirs, lagoons, reed beds and salt marshes, fed by water from the Segura River. It is a crucial habitat and resting place for hundreds of bird species, including some very rare and endangered ones.
This guide consists of the following 3 sections:
- Discover, get to know El Hondo
- Experience, the climb step by step to the top
- Visiting, practical info for your visit

Toggle1. Discover, get to know El Hondo
From lagoon to lifeline
El Hondo was once part of the immense Albufera of Elche, a large lagoon that stretched across much of the region.
Starting in the Middle Ages, this area was gradually drained for agriculture. What remains today is a unique landscape largely formed by two large water reservoirs, Embalse de Poniente and Embalse de Levante. These were constructed in the 1920s to store irrigation water from the Segura River and distribute it to farmers.
Although man-made, these reservoirs are fully integrated into nature and, together with the surrounding ponds, reed beds and salt marshes, form a wetland of international significance.
A world-class birding paradise
The ecological value of El Hondo is enormous, especially because of its birds. The park is on the RAMSAR list of important wetlands and is a Special Bird Protection Area (ZEPA). More than 170 bird species have been observed here, some 50 of which breed in the park. El Hondo is vital for:
- Endangered species: the park is home to the most important population of the marbled duck in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest populations in the world of the white-headed duck;
- Breeding birds: species such as the purple coot, knobbly coot, stilted grebe and various heron species find a home here;
- Migratory birds: El Hondo is a crucial resting place for birds on their migration route between Europe and Africa. Depending on the season, you can see large flocks of flamingos, spoonbills, various ducks and waders here;
- Birds of prey: birds of prey such as the marsh harrier and sometimes even the bastard eagle or osprey are also spotted here.
In addition to birds, it is home to fish (including the endangered fartet), amphibians, reptiles and small mammals. The vegetation consists mainly of reeds, rushes and salt-loving plants.
2. Experience, the climb step by step to the top
Walking on wooden walkways (Yellow Route)
The most popular and accessible way to experience the park is via the Yellow Route. This short, circular route of about 1 kilometer starts at the visitor center and takes you across the marsh via wooden walkways.
It is a beautiful walk where you get close to the water and reeds. Along the way there are several observation huts and a watchtower. This trail is fully accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
Other hiking and biking trails
For those who want to see more, there are longer routes:
- Green route: a circular walking route of about 4.5 kilometers through the lagoons of El Rincón and El Saladar;
- Blue route: a longer route of 16 kilometers, recommended for cyclists, which goes deeper into the network of canals(azarbes);
- Red route (ornithological route): a 5-kilometer route along the large reservoirs, especially aimed at birdwatchers. Please note that advance reservations at the visitor center are required for this route, as it passes through a more sensitive part of the park.
Bird watching
For bird lovers. Use the many observation huts and lookout towers along the trails. Bring binoculars and possibly a bird guide. Species diversity is impressive year-round, but spring (breeding season) and fall/winter (bird migration and wintering) are often special.
The Visitor Center
Start your visit at the Centro de Interpretación. Here you will find:
- A permanent exhibition on the nature and culture of El Hondo;
- Maps and route information;
- Sometimes optical equipment on loan (reservations recommended);
- Toilets and a picnic area.
3. Visiting, practical info for your visit
The gates: Elche and Crevillent

- Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa: count on a 20-35 minute drive;

Practical Tips
- Best season: year-round interest for birds, but spring and fall/winter tend to be the richest in species;
- Mosquitoes: especially in the warmer months and around sunrise/sunset, there can be many mosquitoes. Take effective anti-mosquito repellent with you;

Question & Answer
Mag mijn hond mee?
