Isla de Altea

Off the coast of Altea, clearly visible from Playa de l’Olla beach, is Isla de Altea. This small island is covered with low, Mediterranean vegetation and has a small pebble beach where you can dock with a kayak or SUP board.

Isla de Altea is about 500 meters from the mainland and is part of the Serra Gelada Natural Park, which means it is a protected area.

Right next to it is another smaller, cone-shaped rock formation called L’Illot de l’Olla.

Nature and ecological value

The islets are of great ecological value. The seabed around L’Illeta and L’Illot is covered with Posidonia oceanica, a type of seagrass essential to the marine ecosystem.

It provides clear, oxygen-rich water and is a nursery for many species of fish. In addition, the islands are a resting place for various seabirds, such as cormorants.

What can you do on and around Isla de Altea?

  • Kayaking and supping: the most popular way to reach the islands is by kayak or Stand-Up Paddleboard (SUP). From Playa de l’Olla, there are several rental points. The trip is peaceful and offers beautiful views of Altea’ s coastline and the mountains of the Sierra de Bernia;
  • Swimming: for the experienced swimmer, the crossing of about 500 meters is a nice challenge. Do this only in calm seas and preferably not alone;
  • Snorkeling: the clear water and rocky bottom around the islands make this an excellent place for snorkeling. You will see different species of fish and other marine life among the sea grass;
  • Relax: once you arrive at L’Illeta, you can take a break on the small beach, enjoy the tranquility and the view. Remember that you are in a nature reserve: bring back all your trash.

Castell de l’Olla: the fireworks show

Every year, on the Saturday closest to the feast of San Lorenzo (Aug. 10), Isla de Altea is the setting for Castell de l’Olla. A spectacular fireworks show set off from floating platforms at sea.

This event attracts more than 50,000 spectators who gather on the beach and in hundreds of boats in the bay. It is a unique combination of fireworks, music and the reflection on the water. The Castell de l’Olla is considered cultural heritage and is one of the most important events for Altea.
