What is La Muralla Roja?

La Muralla Roja, which means The Red Wall in Spanish, is a postmodern apartment complex designed by renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. The project was completed in 1973 and is a clear example of Bofill’s architectural vision at the time.

The architect: Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura

Ricardo Bofill Taller de Arquitectura (RBTA) designed La Muralla Roja. This is a well-known, international architectural firm founded in 1963 by Ricardo Bofill (died in 2022).

RBTA is known for its innovative and often large, impressive projects. They often combine architectural styles from the Mediterranean and Arab countries with modern, clean forms and new ideas on how to build a city or neighborhood.

La Muralla Roja is an early and very well-known example of their work. It was a precursor to later projects around the world, in which they sought new ways to build houses.

Inspiration and the idea behind the design

The main inspiration for La Muralla Roja comes from the kasbahs in North Africa. These are a kind of fortresses with many corridors and courtyards. The mud houses you see a lot around the Mediterranean were also an example.

Architect Ricardo Bofill used these traditional styles in a new, modern way. His idea was to create a kind of vertical kasbah, a city within a building. It is a maze of stairs, plateaus, bridges and patios (courtyards) that connect the 50 apartments.

This makes it easy for people to meet and there is always something new to discover. You can also see influences from Constructivism, a style of art and architecture with clean, geometric shapes.

More than just a practical building

The famous architect Le Corbusier had the idea of a housing machine: a building had to be above all practical. La Muralla Roja can be seen as a reaction to this, but different and more like art. Where Le Corbusier mainly thought of practical and the same everywhere, Bofill added something beautiful, playful and fitting to people.

La Muralla Roja is a well-organized residential complex, but it is not rigid. It’s exciting how you experience the spaces, the colors are very present and it fits nicely into the landscape. This makes it more of a work of art to live in than just a practical building.

The colors: not chosen at random

What immediately stands out about La Muralla Roja are the colors. They are very important to how you experience the building and what the idea behind it is. The exterior walls have all sorts of shades of red, pink and purple. These colors contrast strongly with the blue of the sea and sky. This really makes the building seem like a stand-alone element.

In contrast, inside, on the patios, in the stairwells and on the roof terraces, you see a lot of blue, indigo (a kind of dark blue) and violet (purplish). Those colors just go nicely with the sky and water. They give a sense of tranquility, and it seems as if the building and its surroundings blend into one another. So the colors were not chosen at random; they create a special, almost dreamlike image.

Apartments and common areas

There are 50 apartments in the complex, from small studios to three-bedroom homes. On the roof are communal terraces with a swimming pool in the shape of a cross. The clean shapes and how the light and shadow play with them make it a very beautiful building to take pictures of.

Where can you find it and visit it?

La Muralla Roja is located on Partida Manzanera (number 3), in the Manzanera neighborhood of Calpe. This striking building stands directly on the coast, near the bay Cala La Manzanera. It is important to know that La Muralla Roja is private residential complex; this means that people live there and you cannot just visit the building inside.

You can get a good look at the complex from the outside and photograph it, though, and that is already a special experience. It is best to go there by car, but finding parking space can be tricky, especially during the busy season.

Staying overnight in La Muralla Roja?

Want to experience what it’s like to stay there? Some of the apartments in La Muralla Roja are rented out by private owners. For example, through booking.com. This is a unique opportunity to also see the building from the inside and completely feel the atmosphere of this special building.

Lake Bofill in the Manzanera district

La Muralla Roja is not Ricardo Bofill’s only unusual building in the Manzanera neighborhood. It is part of a larger plan he had for this neighborhood. Nearby are other striking buildings by his hand that fit nicely together and with the landscape.

Xanadú

The most famous is Xanadú, an experimental apartment complex with green tiles built in 1968. It was a kind of pilot model for a neighborhood with lots of greenery. Also here, Bofill designed El Anfiteatro, a complex resembling the ancient Roman amphitheaters. Together, these buildings form a unique group.

Why is La Muralla Roja so well known?

For vacationers, La Muralla Roja is an obvious landmark and a popular spot for photographs, but its influence is much greater.

  • Popular on Social Media: La Muralla Roja has become very popular again in recent years, especially because of social media like Instagram. Because it is so beautiful to photograph, everyone wants a picture of it. As a result, it has become known all over the world, not just among architects;
  • Set for films and fashion: its unique appearance has also made it a popular spot for commercials, music videos (such as “Do It Right” by Martin Solveig ft. Tkay Maidza) and photo shoots for fashion magazines. This has made the building even more famous and special;
  • A must-see for architecture lovers: for architects, students and other design enthusiasts, La Muralla Roja is an important example and a place many go to. It is studied for its new way of building houses, its striking and bold colors and the intricate layout of its spaces.

Challenges, maintenance and recognition

The enormous popularity also has drawbacks, especially for the privacy of the people who live there and for maintenance. Coastal colors and concrete require constant maintenance.

The building’s value is officially recognized: in 2023, Valencia’s regional government declared La Muralla Roja a Bien de Relevancia Local. That means it has been recognized as an important heritage site for the region and will receive some protection.
