Over 290 stalls full of fresh produce

The market covers an area of more than 11,000 square meters. A total of 292 stalls can be found there. The space is divided into two floors connected by escalators and elevators.

The layout is clear:

  • Souterrain: here you mainly buy meat, poultry and various types of cheese.

  • Upper floor: this floor is known for its large fish department. You will also find plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and dried fruits here.

The products often come directly from the Alicante region. Many market vendors have been here for generations with their family businesses. The quality is high and the prices are fair.

Visitors come not only to buy groceries, but also to eat directly. In the market hall you will find several small bars and stalls where you can order something on the spot. It is a unique experience to stand among the locals while the market vendors are touting their wares.

Some recommendations to try:

A building with modernist details

Architect Francisco Fajardo Guardiola created the design for the market in 1915. Construction was finally completed in 1922 under the direction of Juan Vidal Ramos. The style of the market hall is a mix of Valencian modernism with other influences.

The building has a rectangular shape and is constructed of steel, brick and glass. These materials allow plenty of natural daylight to enter. On the side you can see a circular extension with a dome. The residents also call this part “the traffic circle.

The stationary 11:20 a.m. clock

The history of the market also has a black day. During the Spanish Civil War, a heavy bombing took place on May 25, 1938. Italian warplanes dropped bombs on the market while it was very crowded. More than 300 people lost their lives in the process.

In memory of these victims, the clock in the main hall still stands still. The hands point to 11:20 a.m., the exact time of the attack. Inside the building hangs a plaque recalling this event.

Flowers and tapas in the square

At the rear of the market is the Plaza 25 de Mayo. The locals also call this the Plaza de las Flores. They get this name from the colorful flower stalls in the square. It is a cozy place where people meet for a chat.

Around the market are many good tapas bars. Especially on Saturday afternoons it is extra busy here during the“Tardeo. People then drink a glass of wine or beer after doing their shopping. Within walking distance you will also find the Tossal mountain with the Castillo de San Fernando.
