Mushroom Street Alicante (Calle de las Setas)
Discover the most cheerful and colorful street in Alicante
In the heart of Alicante lies one of the city’s most unique landmarks: the Calle San Francisco. For most people, however, this street is better known by its nickname: the “Calle de las Setas,” or Mushroom Street.
The street owes this name to the huge, 10 colorful mushrooms that have defined its streetscape since 2013. The works of art are so distinctive that almost everyone knows the street by its nickname.
In this article you will find all the practical information you need for a visit, from the background of the street and its two names to the best tips for a successful day.

The famous mushroom street in Alicante.
So what makes the street so special?
What makes Paddenstoelenstraat so unique are the huge mushroom sculptures that define the streetscape. Instead of ordinary lampposts and benches, you will find 2 to 3 meter high, colorful mushrooms that together create a special, almost fairy-tale atmosphere. These physical works of art are the central eye-catchers and give the street its playful and unique character.
The story behind Mushroom Street
Before 2013, Calle San Francisco had a very different reputation. Although it was an important connecting street, it was a place people preferred to avoid. The street was dark, had few attractive stores and a bad reputation, which made people reluctant to walk through it at night.
In a time of economic crisis, the city government was looking for a low-cost idea to brighten up the city. The inspiration came from a design by Hogueras artist Pachi García Esquiva. The plan was to transform the street into a pedestrian area that would appeal to families.
In 2013, the street was decorated for 66,000 euros with the now famous, meter-high mushroom sculptures and colorful paving.
Although initially criticized for its cost, the transformation turned out to be a huge success. In the warmth of the new, cheerful atmosphere, new bars, restaurants and stores soon opened. Social media, especially Instagram, did the rest.
The Mushroom Street became an unexpected tourist attraction and is now one of Alicante’s most photographed spots.
What can you do in the Mushroom Street?
In the Mushroom Street you can stroll around and enjoy the unique atmosphere. The works of art make a great backdrop for a leisurely stroll as well as a wonderful background for surprising vacation photos.
In addition to admiring the colorful murals and sculptures, you can explore the surrounding streets. Here you will find nice stores and cozy cafes where you can stop for a cup of coffee or try a local dish. It is the ideal place to unwind away from the hustle and bustle of the street and promenade.
Where can you find the Mushroom Street?
Mushroom Street is located in the center of Alicante. The street is very close to the famous promenade, the Explanada de España (the boulevard with the mosaic tiles). Mushroom Street runs parallel to this boulevard, about two streets inland.
To be precise, the street connects two famous squares:
- The Portal de Elche (a square known for its large, ancient trees);
- The Plaza de Calvo Sotelo.
The easiest way to find the street is to walk down one of the side streets from the Explanada de España, toward the old center. Since the street is a pedestrian area and full of large, colorful mushrooms, you can hardly miss it if you are in the neighborhood.
Renovation of Mushroom Street
Mushroom Street is getting a major overhaul. After years of complaints about wear and tear, damaged mushrooms and a neglected appearance, the municipality has approved a renovation project.
The project, with a budget of over €111,000, will take about three months to complete. The work includes complete repainting of the street, and the cleaning and restoration of the ten large mushrooms and two cottages.
Importantly, the two slides, previously removed, will also be reinstalled to give the street back its playful function. Local business owners have been delighted, as they have been pushing for this renovation for years.
