1. Discover, get to know Peñon de Ifach
A landmark full of history
The Peñón de Ifach has been an important landmark for sailors since ancient times. Due to its strategic location, the rock served as a vantage point and refuge over the centuries.
On the slopes are archaeological remains found of an Iberian village and a medieval settlement, the Pobla Medieval de Ifach. These inhabitants sought protection here from the pirate attacks that plagued the coast.
A small park with unique nature
In 1987 the area was declared a natural park. With only 53 hectares it is one of the smallest nature parks in Europe, but its biodiversity is enormous. Thanks to its unique microclimate, some 300 different plant species, including some rare Valencian varieties.
In addition, the park is an important breeding ground for birds, such as the Eleonora’s falcon and several species of gulls. Not surprisingly, it is the most visited natural park in the Valencian Community.
2. Experience, the climb step by step to the top
Climbing the Peñón de Ifach consists of two very different parts. It is crucial to know what you are getting into.
Part 1: the walk to the tunnel (for everyone)
The trail begins quietly at the visitor center. A well laid-out path winds up through the Mediterranean vegetation. This first section is doable for just about anyone, including families with children.
Along the way you are already treated to beautiful views of the port of Calpe and the salt flats. After about 20-30 minutes of walking you will reach the entrance to a tunnel. This is the turning point.
Part 2: the tunnel and the climb to the top (the challenge)
The tunnel, carved in 1918, marks the beginning of the challenging section. From here on, the route is not suitable for children under the age of 18. The path through the 30-meter-long tunnel is dark and the stones have become extremely slippery due to the many visitors. Fortunately, there are ropes stretched on both sides to hold on tightly.
After the tunnel, the character of the hike changes completely. The wide path gives way to a narrow, rocky track, marked with red paint. This is no longer hiking, but scrambling and climbing.
You need your hands to hold on to ropes and rocks as you make your way up steep precipices.
About halfway up the climb you come to a fork. Here you can choose:
- Left: a slightly shorter route to a lower viewpoint (Mirador de Carabineros);
- Right: the steep, final climb to the absolute top.
Both routes are challenging, but the reward at the top is an unforgettable 360-degree panorama. On a clear day, you can see the entire coastline, from Moraira to Benidorm, and sometimes even the island of Ibiza in the distance.
3. Visiting, practical info for your visit
Proper preparation is essential for a safe and enjoyable climb.
Mandatory reservations: here’s how to arrange your free ticket
To protect nature, the number of visitors per day is limited to 300, so you must reserve a free ticket online in advance.
- Where: you can do this through the official website of the Natural Parks of the Generalitat Valenciana;
- When: you can book up to a month in advance. Especially in high season, it is recommended to do this early;
- Which route: choose the ruta roja (red route) to access the summit.
A perfect day trip from the area
Thanks to its iconic status and central location, the Peñón de Ifach is a perfect (half) day trip from almost all the popular resorts on the Costa Blanca North.
- Calpe: the rock is the symbol of the town, so from your accommodation in Calpe you will be there in no time;
- Moraira and Benissa: only 15 to 25 minutes away, a visit to the rock can be perfectly combined with a day in Calpe;
- Altea and Albir: after a nice, short car ride along the coast of about 20-25 minutes, you are at the foot of the mountain you saw from afar;
- Benidorm: from the hustle and bustle of Benidorm, in half an hour you are in a completely different world of rugged nature;
- Jávea and Dénia: Also from the more northern coastal towns, the Peñón de Ifach is a popular excursion, count on a 30- to 45-minute car ride.
How to get there.
The starting point is easy to reach by car. Navigate to the Carrer del Peñon in Calpe. At the end of this street is a small, free parking lot near the visitor center. Be warned: this parking lot is often full.
Your packing list for the climb
- Good shoes: Sturdy athletic shoes with tread are the bare minimum. Slippers or sandals are dangerous and inappropriate;
- Sufficient water: There is no water point on the mountain. Bring a minimum of 1.5 liters per person;
- Snacks: energy bars, nuts or fruit will give you a boost during the climb;
- Sun Protection: a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential;

- Clothing: wear breathable clothing and, even in summer, bring a sweater or windbreaker, as it can be quite windy at the summit.
Alternatives at the base of the rock
Is the climb to the top too challenging? No problem! At the foot of the Peñón there is plenty to do as well.
- Las Salinas de Calpe: walk along the salt flats, an ancient lagoon where, with a little luck, you can spot flamingos;
