The history in brief
Pilar de la Horadada has a rich history dating back to Roman times, when it was a resting place along the Vía Augusta. Over the centuries, the city has seen influences from various civilizations, including the Iberians and the Moors. Its strategic location on the coast made it vulnerable to pirate attacks, which led to the construction of watchtowers such as the Torre Horadada, which later gave its name to the resort.
After its reconquest by Catholic monarchs, Pilar de la Horadada became a border area between Castile and Aragon. In the 20th century, the town sought independence from Orihuela, which eventually led to its segregation in 1986. Since then, Pilar de la Horadada has experienced strong growth and has become a thriving place with a diverse population.
The name ‘Pilar de la Horadada’
The name “Pilar de la Horadada” is intertwined with the town’s history. “Pilar” means “pillar” and “Horadada” refers to “pierce,” possibly inspired by a rocky cove where legend says a statue of the Virgin Mary was found.
Another explanation refers to the 16th-century watchtower“Torre Horadada,” built for protection against pirate attacks. Probably both the legend and the tower, which possibly stood near the cove with the statue of Mary, contributed to the name “Pilar de la Horadada.”
