Serra Gelada (Sierra Helada) Natural Park

Natural park highlighting the lighthouse in Albir

Welcome to one of the Costa Blanca’s most impressive natural parks: the Parque Natural de la Serra Gelada. Located between Benidorm and Albir, this park offers a unique combination of rugged nature and a protected marine area.

The name, which means “Frozen Mountain,” refers to the shady side that feels cooler and the reflection of the moon on the rocks, which can give an icy impression.

Sierra Helada(Serra Gelada in Valencian) is known for its spectacular, steep cliffs. The area has several hiking trails, ranging from a leisurely stroll for the whole family to a challenging climb for the experienced adventurer.

This guide consists of the following 3 sections:

  1. Discover, get to know Sierra Helada
  2. Experience, the hiking trails
  3. Visiting, practical info for your visit

1. Discover, get to know Sierra Helada

A unique landscape of land and sea

Sierra Helada is not just another mountain range; it is the first land and sea park in the Valencian Community, protected since 2005. The park covers more than 5,500 hectares, most of which is sea. The coastline is dominated by cliffs more than 300 meters high, among the highest on Spain’s east coast.

Underwater, the richness continues with vast fields of eelgrass (Posidonia oceanica), which are essential to the ecosystem and provide the crystal clear waters.

The park is home to diverse flora and fauna, including seabirds such as the petrel and peregrine falcon, and unique plant species that have adapted to the salty and rocky landscape.

Traces of the past

Along the edges of the park you will find historical relics that tell the story of the region. For example, there is the Torre de la Caleta, a watchtower from the 16th century that served as a defense against pirates. Also, the old ochre mines, which you can visit via a side trail, testify to the industrial history in this otherwise unspoiled area.

2. Experience, the hiking trails

Sierra Helada Nature Park has hiking trails for everyone. There are quiet trails that are perfect for a family hike, as well as tough climbing routes that reward you with spectacular views. So you will always find a route here that suits you. Below are the options broken down into three distinct routes.

Route 1: the Albir lighthouse

This is without a doubt the most popular and accessible trail in the park, perfect for a relaxing morning or afternoon. The trail is fully paved and rises gradually, making it ideal for hikers of all ages. Daily, you’ll also encounter many runners here who use the route up and down to the lighthouse. You can also do just fine here with a stroller or wheelchair.

The walk to the lighthouse starts at the information kiosk in the parking lot at the end of Carrer Neptú in Albir. From there it is a comfortable 5 kilometers there and back, taking an average of 1.5 to 2 hours.

Along the way you pass several viewpoints (miradors) that treat you to a stunning panorama of the bay of Altea, with the iconic rock of Calpe in the distance. The final point, the lighthouse Faro de l’Albir, is a wonderful reward.

Route 2: the traverse to Benidorm

Looking for more adventure and not afraid of considerable effort? Then the traverse across the mountain range, also called the yellow route (Travessia de la Serra Gelada) is the perfect choice. This trip is intended for experienced hikers with a good physical condition and is not suitable for people who are afraid of heights.

The route also starts in Albir and ends at the famous cross of Benidorm, La Creu de Benidorm. The path is unpaved, rocky, and in some parts you will have to climb and scramble considerably. The total distance is about 8 kilometers (one way), where you will soon spend 3.5 to 4 hours to 4 hours. However, the reward is unmatched: you reach the highest point, Alt del Governador (438 m), and enjoy phenomenal 360-degree views.

Important to know: there is no phone signal on large parts of this route. Go prepared with sturdy hiking boots and always let someone know your route.

Route 3: the climb to the top from Benidorm

Are you staying in Benidorm and want to go straight up for the best views? Then you can also start the traverse in reverse or make a shorter climb to the top and back.

  • For whom: hikers staying in Benidorm who want a shorter, spirited climb;
  • Starting Point: La Creu de Benidorm;
  • Endpoint: Alt del Governador (and back);
  • Features: same challenging, rocky trails as the traverse, but as a round trip route from Benidorm;
  • Duration: approximately 2 – 2.5 hours;
  • Highlights: quick access to the best viewpoint over the Benidorm skyline.

3. Visiting, practical info for your visit

Good preparation is half the battle. These tips will help you get the most out of your visit to the Sierra Helada.

An ideal day trip from the area

The natural park is centrally located on the northern part of the Costa Blanca, making it a perfect day trip from several places:

  • Albir: you walk from the promenade in Albir towards the natural park; the route to the lighthouse is one of the most popular activities in the area;
  • Benidorm: the town lies on the other side of the park, Benidorm provides the starting point for the challenging climb to the cross and summit;
  • Altea: just a ten-minute drive from Altea, you will find the tranquility of nature as the perfect change from the atmospheric streets of the old town;
  • L’Alfàs del Pi and La Nucia: the park is located in the territory of these municipalities, making it a “backyard” for residents and visitors of these villages to walk in.

How to get there.

  • Starting point Albirnavigate to Carrer Neptú. At the end is a free parking lot (about 50 spaces). Please note that, especially on weekends and in the morning, it can fill up quickly;
  • Starting point Benidorm: drive up to the cross, La Creu de Benidorm. You can park your car along the road;
  • Public transportation: an ideal solution to the traverse! After your walk from Benidorm, take bus line 10 back to Albir. Always check the current timetable.

The ultimate packing list

  • Water: essential, count on at least 1.5 liters per person, as you can’t buy anything on the road;
  • Sun Protection: a cap, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential;
  • Good shoes: For the lighthouse route, athletic shoes are sufficient, but for the traverse, walking shoes with good grip are a must;
  • Snacks: Bring something to eat, such as fruit or energy bars;
  • Windproof jacket: Even on a sunny day, it can be quite windy at the summit.

Best time for your visit

The park is beautiful year-round. In summer, however, avoid the hottest hours of the day. Temperatures can soar and there is hardly any shade. Spring and fall are ideal, and it is also a perfect walk on a sunny winter day.
