Top 10 Highlights in Alicante
1. Visit Castillo de Santa Bárbara
This castle stands at the top of Monte Benacantil hill. From this spot you can have a good view of the city and the sea(360-degree view).
It is one of the larger fortresses in Spain and has played an important role in protecting Alicante over the centuries.

Height: this structure stands on a 166-meter-high hill and can be seen from many places in the city;

Past: Construction began in the ninth century when the Muslims controlled the area, then the Christians took over in 1248;

Visit: you can walk up through the trails or use the elevator that starts at Postiguet beach.

2. Visit the old town of Alicante
The center of Alicante is geographically situated between two striking points:
- The castle of Santa Barbara: this historic fort, located on a hilltop, forms an impressive backdrop on the north side of the center;
- Explanada de España: this famous boulevard, with its special mosaic floor and palm trees, marks the southern border of the center and offers a beautiful view of the harbor.
The center itself includes several neighborhoods, including:
- Barrio de Santa Cruz: this is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Alicante, with narrow streets, historic buildings, and a cozy atmosphere;
- El Centro: this is the most central part of the city, surrounded by stores, restaurants, and a number of small squares.

3. Take a stroll along the promenade
Alicante’s boulevard, better known as the Explanada de España, is a promenade that runs parallel to the port.
Characteristic are the millions of red, cream, and black colored mosaic tiles that form a wavy pattern, flanked by four rows of palm trees.
This lively walking boulevard is a popular (photogenic) meeting place for both local residents and tourists due to the number of restaurants, terraces, and places to sit.

4. Visit the port of Alicante
The port of alicante, located at the foot of Santa Bárbara Castle and along Explanada de España, has a long history dating back to 1271.
Originally, it was an important trading port, but this function largely disappeared in the 1980s. In the 1990s, the area underwent a transformation into the current marina and recreation area.
Today, the port area, known locally as El Puerto, is focused on tourism and recreation. You will find the marina, several restaurants, bars, stores and a casino.
In addition, the port has gained prominence as the starting point of The Ocean Race sailing race, partly as the museum further down the harbor.
The port is easily accessible and highly recommended when visiting Alicante. Parking is available in the port at Interparking Plaza del Puerto.

5. Visit de Basílica de Santa María
This Gothic basilica from the 14th century was built on the remains of an ancient mosque. It is the oldest building in the city still used for services and is located in the middle of the historic center.

Features: the church has a richly carved front, a rose window and the Capilla de la Comunión;

Towers: the building has two different towers, with the clock tower offering a good view of the city;

Interior: inside the basilica are a large altar from the 18th century and a historic organ that is still in use.
6. To the beach in Alicante
Alicante has 7 beaches and 6 calas, each with their own characteristics.
Playa de San Juan is a vast sandy beach with plenty of amenities and easy access. Extending from the center of town you will find Playa del Postiguet, the city beach near the castle.
A little further away are the quieter and wider sandy beaches Playa de las Huertas and Playa de los Saladares. For a calmer atmosphere and clean sandy beaches, Playa de la Albufereta and Playa de San Gabriel are good options, although the latter is more frequented by locals.
In addition to sandy beaches, Alicante also offers several rocky calas. Cala de la Palmera, Platja lliure d’Alacant and Cala Cantalar are secluded coves ideal for snorkelers and tranquility seekers, often with the possibility of naturism. Playa de la Almadraba is a small, quiet cove with a mix of sand and rocks.
Also La Calita Playa and Cala de la Sangueta are perfect for those seeking privacy and clear waters in a natural setting. Many of these beaches have also been awarded Blue Flag awards.
7. Going to the market in Alicante
The Mercado Central in Alicante is a lively, covered market in the heart of the city, where you can taste the authentic Spanish atmosphere.
In this beautiful building you will find a wide range of fresh produce, from fruits and vegetables to freshly caught fish and meat.
- There are also numerous stalls selling local specialties, such as olive oil, cheeses and Spanish ham. This market in Alicante is located at the Avenida Alfonso el Sabio (number 10).
- Frequency: daily (except Sundays);
- Time of day: from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (until 3 p.m. on Saturdays and holidays).

The week is full of music, parades and daily fireworks. The celebration ends on the night of June 24 with the burning of all the statues, which is also called the cremà.

11. Shopping in Alicante
Alicante is an excellent place for shopping. The traditional shopping area is located between the Rambla de Mendez Nuñez and Avenida Federico Soto. You can also shop in the following shopping centers:
- Centro Comercial Plaza Mar 2: this modern shopping center has more than 100 stores, including international brands, restaurants and a cinema. It is located in the center of the city and is easily accessible by public transport;
- Centro Comercial Gran Vía: this large shopping center has more than 200 stores, including Zara, H&M, Primark and El Corte Inglés. It also has a food court with a variety of restaurants and cafes;
- The Outlet Stores Alicante: this outlet center has more than 80 stores with discounts on brands such as Nike, Adidas, Desigual and Mango. It is located just outside the city center, but is easily accessible by car;
- La Marina: this shopping center has more than 60 stores, including a supermarket, a hardware store and a furniture store. It also has a food court with a variety of restaurants and cafes;
- Habana Center: this shopping center has more than 50 stores, including a supermarket, a clothing store and an electronics store. It also has a food court with a variety of restaurants and cafes.
12. Visit the The Ocean Race Museum in Alicante
This museum in the port of Alicante focuses entirely on the history of the famous sailing race around the world. Since 2008, the city has been the permanent starting point of this race, which is why the museum is located here.
In the building, you will learn about the harsh conditions at sea, the technology of modern boats and the importance of a clean ocean.
You can visit the permanent exhibitions for free to get an idea of the past 50 years of competitions.
Additional activities are available for a fee, such as a simulator that mimics movement on the water or a tour of the race boat Brasil 1.

In addition to birds, other animals live in the park, such as rabbits, foxes and snakes. El Hondo is an important nature reserve for the region and is therefore well protected.
21. Go water sports along the coast
Thanks to the extensive coastline, Alicante is a suitable location for water sports. The climate and the sea make the following activities possible:
- Sailing and catamaran cruises: explore the coastline and take a trip during sunset;
- Kayaking and supping (Stand-Up Paddleboarding): discover bays and caves;
- Diving and snorkeling: view the underwater world, especially around the island of Tabarca, a protected marine reserve;
- Jet skiing and parasailing: for those looking for an adrenaline kick;
- Windsurfing and kitesurfing: take advantage of the sea breeze, especially in locations such as Gran Alacant.
Several companies along beaches such as Playa del Postiguet and Playa de San Juan offer equipment rental and lessons.
22. Hiking and biking in the region
The interior of Alicante has mountains and nature parks suitable for hiking and cycling:
- Nature parks: areas such as El Hondo, Les Puntes de Gosàlvez and Carrascal de la Font Roja offer various hiking and trail running routes of varying difficulty levels;
- Vías verdes: these are converted old railway lines that now serve as car-free paths for walkers and cyclists. The Vía Verde de Agost and the Vía Verde de Alcoy are well-known routes;
- Mountain climbing and biking: for more experienced athletes, the mountains around Alicante, such as the Puig Campana, offer challenging routes with panoramic views.

The Costa Blanca has many golf courses. In the immediate vicinity of Alicante you will find several clubs, often overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Some well-known courses are: Alicante Golf, El Plantío Golf Resort, Alenda Golf and Bonalba Golf.

24. Alicante Gastronómica
In September, the Fira Alacant transforms into a culinary center where Michelin-starred chefs and hundreds of exhibitors celebrate Mediterranean cuisine.
Visitors can participate in exclusive workshops, tastings and prestigious competitions such as the national championship for the best Spanish tortilla.

25. Alicante Film Festival
In late May, the city is completely dedicated to international cinema during this prestigious annual festival.

26. Alicante Jazz festival
During the month of July, the auditorium ADDA welcomes international luminaries of jazz and flamenco fusion for a series of special concerts.

This two-week cultural highlight has become a fixture that adds a sophisticated ambiance to the city’s summer evenings.
27. Special holidays in Alicante
- January – February: as in many other parts of Spain, carnival is celebrated exuberantly in Alicante with parades, costumes and parties. The exact dates vary each year;
- March – April: Semana Santa (Holy Week), this holy week is characterized by impressive processions with religious images through the streets. The dates shift every year, but always fall in the spring;
- June: Las Hogueras de San Juan (Bonfires of Saint John), the most famous festival in Alicante, also known as the official city festival of Alicante. This festival takes place annually around June 20-24;
- October: on October 9, the Day of the Valencian Community (Día de la Comunidad Valenciana) is celebrated with various activities and events.
28. Visit a museum in Alicante
The city offers diverse cultural offerings. Below are some of the important museums:
- MARQ (Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Alicante): An award-winning archaeological museum that interactively exhibits the history of the region, from prehistory to modern times;
- MACA (Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Alicante): Housed in a historic building, this contemporary art museum displays works by 20th-century Spanish artists, including Picasso, Miró and Dalí, as well as an important collection by Eusebio Sempere;
- MUBAG (Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina): This fine arts museum, housed in the Gravina Palace, focuses on painting from Alicante from the 16th to early 20th centuries;
- The Ocean Race Museum: a modern museum dedicated to the famous sailing race, with interactive exhibits on the history and challenges of the race.
In addition, there are smaller, specialized museums such as the Museo de Hogueras (about the local Las Hogueras de San Juan fiestas) and the MUSA (Museo de la Ciudad de Alicante) in the Castle of Santa Bárbara, which highlights the city’s history.

Things to do from Alicante
29. Walk along the waterfalls of Algar
The Algar waterfalls are a popular destination for day trips. The waterfalls are about a 20-minute drive from Albir and offer refreshing baths and a beautiful walk through nature.

30. Climb the Peñón de Ifach in Calpe
The ascent of the Peñon de Ifach offers a sporting challenge with the reward of panoramic views of Sierra Helada, Albir, Benidorm, Altea, Calpe and Benissa.
The nature park features trails that vary in difficulty, with the route becoming more adventurous after the tunnel for the experienced hiker.
At the summit, you experience a unique sense of freedom over 300 meters above the Mediterranean Sea.

31. Visit Albir & Altea (a 40-minute drive away)
Combine a visit to Albir with by extension Altea. Start in Albir with a walk along the beautiful promenade and a visit to the Faro del Albir (the lighthouse of Albir) for stunning views.
Then drive (or walk) on to Altea and get lost in the white streets of the old town, admiring the blue dome of the church and visiting the many art galleries. Or stay on the coast and stroll along the new El Bol boulevard.
32. Visit Elche (a 25-minute drive away)
Discover the palm oasis of Elche, with the largest palm garden in Europe – El Palmeral.
Stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage Site, visit the historic downtown and admire the Basilica de Santa María with its mysterious Misteri d’Elx.
33. Visit Guadalest (a 60-minute drive away)
Walking around the mountain village El Castell de Guadalest.
This village clings to the rocks and offers a beautiful castle, a reservoir and breathtaking views of the valley. Also visit the various museums and souvenir shops.
34. Visit Villajoyosa: (a 35-minute drive away)
Visit the chocolate town of Villajoyosa. The cottages along the coast are painted in a variety of colors.
Combine a visit to a chocolate factory with the historical sights such as the Torre de Sant Josep and the archaeological site La Malladeta.
